SolarAfrica Acquires Nyakallo Utility-Scale Solar and BESS Project in Limpopo, South Africa from Norsk Renewables

SolarAfrica has entered into an agreement to acquire the Nyakallo solar and BESS project in Limpopo, South Africa from Norsk Renewables. Located within an Eskom transmission corridor, the project avoids long-lead transmission upgrades and is expected to evacuate power from H2 2028. Norsk Renewables will continue as development partner through financial close and construction.

Technology details

Utility-scale solar PV project with a co-located battery energy storage system (BESS), enabling storage of solar energy generated during the day for use outside production hours. Located within one of Eskom's key transmission corridors, enabling direct grid connection without reliance on new transmission infrastructure. Financial close anticipated within 12 months. Power evacuation expected from H2 2028.

Power purchase agreement (PPA)

Offtake structure expected to combine large anchor C&I customers and energy traders, enabling flexible procurement beyond traditional long-term PPAs.

Additional information

SolarAfrica will act as long-term owner and funding sponsor. Norsk Renewables will continue to support through development, financing preparation and commercialisation. Project has already advanced through key milestones including grid connection, permitting and initial design. Offtake structure expected to combine large anchor customers and energy traders. Project forms part of SolarAfrica's approximately 1.5 GW advanced development portfolio. Norsk Renewables is a Norwegian developer with operational assets in Brazil, Ukraine and Pakistan.
