Royal Vopak Acquires 79% Stake in Green Energy Storage and Takes FID on 200 MW / 800 MWh BESS in Oosterhout, Netherlands

Royal Vopak has completed the acquisition of a 79% controlling stake in Green Energy Storage (GES) and taken a final investment decision on a 200 MW / 800 MWh battery energy storage project in Oosterhout, Netherlands, for a total investment of approximately €230 million. Construction is set to begin shortly, with commercial operations expected in H1 2028. Greenchoice will offtake 50% of capacity under an 8-year tolling agreement.

Technology details

200 MW / 800 MWh (4-hour duration) battery energy storage system, one of the largest BESS projects currently under development in the Netherlands. Connected to the high-voltage grid, designed to support grid balancing and ensure grid consistency. Construction commencing shortly, with commercial operations expected in H1 2028. Greenchoice will acquire 50% of capacity under an 8-year tolling agreement.

Additional information

Total investment of approximately €230 million covering both the GES acquisition and the 200 MW / 800 MWh project. As of 1 July 2026, Vopak holds a 79% controlling stake in GES; terms agreed for acquisition of the remaining 21% within two years. GES is fully consolidated into Vopak's financial statements from 1 July 2026. Transaction follows a memorandum of understanding announced on 7 May 2026. Vopak acquires GES as a development platform, project pipeline and asset management platform. Greenchoice has agreed to a tolling contract for 50% of capacity under an 8-year agreement.
